What is Orff?
Orff is an approach to music education that integrates movement, speech, rhythm and song into every activity. Children learn through doing, exploring and improvising. They are active participants in an integrated, guided process, one that allows for differing musical abilities. A structured, sequential development of knowledge and skills encourages joyful participation, creativity and personal musical growth from all participants.
The Orff ensemble consists of a variety of xylophones and metallophones from soprano to bass ranges, played by mallets. Non-pitched percussion instruments (drums, wood blocks, triangles, etc.) are also used for additional musical colour. For more information, visit www.orffcanada.ca
The Recorder-Orff Program is designed to give your child further experience with the fundamental elements of music while still having fun, and to incorporate a regular practice routine into their schedule, preparing them for future private instruction.
Sample Class Activities:
- Singing (2, 3-part rounds)
- Movement (body/space awareness, beat, coordination, physical representation of concepts)
- Recorder (technique, songs, duets)
- Orff Ensemble (singing & playing chord patterns and ostinato patterns)
- Music Reading Games (to reinforce music notation and rhythms)
- Class Concert at the end of the year!
Orff allows each child to participate and enjoy the pleasure of making music together. Each child contributes according to his/her own abilities. A sense of COMMUNITY is nurtured as we sing, move and play instruments together, resulting in children who are musically independent and have the confidence, skills and desire to CREATE their own music. |
